When something goes wrong

You press one button. We handle everything else.

The emergency button in the Helivac app

A real person, not a recording. Hold the button for three seconds and you are through to our 24-hour medical call centre, with your location and medical profile already on the controller's screen.

The ride is covered. You are taken to the closest hospital or clinic that suits your condition and your cover. The ambulance cost is covered by your membership.

If the road is not an option. On Assist, when a patient meets the medical flight criteria, a helicopter crewed by a doctor and paramedic trauma team is sent, and R50,000 is paid to the main member within 30 days.

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions we get most.

Do I still need this if I have medical aid?

If you have medical aid, keep it. Helivac is not a medical aid and does not replace one.

Medical aid covers what happens once you are at the hospital: the ward, the specialist, the account. Helivac covers the part before that: someone getting to you, deciding where to take you, and paying for the ambulance. Many of our members have medical aid. They keep it. Helivac sits alongside it.

How does payment work? Do I need a card?

No card. You approve one DebiCheck debit order with your own bank, usually in your banking app. Your cover is active as soon as the mandate is approved. The once-off joining fee, R150 on Helivac Core and R200 on Helivac Assist, is collected by debit order 2 to 3 business days after you approve it.

Your monthly fee is then collected on the day of the month you choose. You can cancel any time with 30 days' notice.

Who counts as family? Can I add my parents?

One membership covers 12 people in total: you and 11 others. The main member must be between 18 and 70. Parents must be under 70 when the membership is activated, and children are covered until they turn 25.

Helicopter evacuation is assessed against strict medical flight criteria. More than 99.9% of responses are by road, because that is almost always the fastest way to reach care.

Will you really send a helicopter?

Rarely, and only when it is the right call. More than 99.9% of our responses are by road ambulance, because that is almost always the fastest and safest way to reach care.

On Assist, when a patient meets the medical flight criteria and the road is not an option, a helicopter crewed by a doctor and paramedic trauma team is sent, and R50,000 is paid to the main member within 30 days.

What is not covered?

Motorbike incidents, rider or passenger, are excluded. So are pre-existing conditions and incidents involving alcohol or drugs. Cover applies inside South Africa only.

The R20,000 casualty pre-payment is paid to the hospital, not to you, and must be authorised by our 24-hour centre before you arrive at casualty. Read the full terms.

How quickly am I covered after joining?

Straight away. As soon as your bank confirms the DebiCheck mandate, your membership is active. Download the app, set up your medical profile, and you are ready.

So nobody has to work it out on the side of the road.

Join online, add your family, approve the debit order with your bank. Your cover is active straight away.
